Joe Nuyen is a corporate health care attorney with over thirty years of experience serving as general and special counsel to businesses and nonprofit organizations of every size, most of which are in the health care industry.
Mr. Nuyen has extensive experience representing individuals and organizations in the health care industry. He currently serves as counsel to a number of hospitals and health systems, life science companies, home medical equipment companies and pharmacies. He has also represented physicians, physician group practices, home health agencies, hospices, and ambulance companies. He regularly serves as special counsel to health care providers in mergers and acquisitions and regulatory matters, including compliance with federal and state antifraud statutes and maintenance of tax-exempt status.
Mr. Nuyen graduated magna cum laude from Wayne State University Law School in 1982, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif and Wayne Law Review. He received his undergraduate degree, cum laude, from Kalamazoo College with high honors in history and a minor in chemistry in 1979. Mr. Nuyen was admitted to the State Bar of Michigan in 1982 and The Florida Bar in 1992.
He became board certified as a specialist in Health Law by The Florida Bar in 1995, the first year certification was granted in Health Law. Board Certification is the Florida Bar’s highest level of recognition of an attorney’s competency and experience. Only attorneys who have earned the Florida Bar’s Board Certification distinction are allowed to describe themselves as legal specialists in a specific field of practice in recognition of their special knowledge, skills and proficiency in that area of law.
Mr. Nuyen has been recognized by clients and his peers for excellence in the practice of health care law. He has been named to the last twenty editions of The Best Lawyers in America. In 2012, he was named Health Care Lawyer of the Year for Ann Arbor by Best Lawyers, and the firm received a first-tier ranking in Health Care Law from U.S. News and World Report-Best Lawyers, a designation the firm has received in each succeeding year.
